Postdoctoral Research Scientist - Analytical Instrumentation
Location: Birmingham, AL
The Southern Research Energy & Environment team is composed of scientists and engineers working on an exciting, diverse set of topics, including: water treatment, water quality monitoring, biofuels, biochemicals, sustainable chemistry, catalysis, resource (lithium, germanium, rare earth elements, carbon dioxide, nutrients, waste heat) recovery and utilization, generation IV nuclear power (e.g. molten salt reactors), food-water-energy system research, fertilizer product development, renewable energy, and energy storage (electrical, chemical, and thermal).
Improved water quality data is needed in order to optimize industrial processes (e.g. wastewater treatment processes), trigger environmental remediation, increase water reuse, and protect human health. In response to this emerging growth sector, Southern Research started a new business focused on the development and commercialization of new water quality monitoring products. We seek a Postdoctoral Research Scientist to lead the development, from concept through field validation, of new water quality monitoring techniques that include continuous water quality monitoring systems, sample conditioning products, and new analytical methods. This development work will encompass various analytes, including heavy metal contaminants, biological agents, and a wide range of other chemical pollutants.
The Postdoctoral Research Scientist will utilize their technical knowledge to develop new products or methods via modeling and experiments, developing prototypes, analyzing data, writing reports, and communicating results internally and externally. You will be part of a team focused on turning research concepts into commercially viable products. This effort will involve close collaboration with universities, small businesses, and large commercial instrument manufacturing companies. You will be counted on to address the inevitable challenges to go along with developing new technologies and your work will require creativity, idea generation, problem solving and decision making.
Candidates must have a strong work ethic, work well in team environments, work independently, and conduct their work in a safe and efficient manner. The Post-Doctoral Research Scientist position will be located in Birmingham, AL.
